Taking care of our reefs - Sustainable Resorts
Staying in sustainable resorts contributes to the planet, find out how El Cid Resorts contributes in the care of the coral reefs.
Day by day we become more aware of the fragility of the environment and the consequences that our non-intentional acts affect nature. That's why we are constantly looking for options and becoming more and more eco-conscious and opting for sustainable options.
We are becoming more careful each day when choosing our daily use products, such as the type of packaging, whether it is biodegradable or not, and now we try to apply it to our vacations, since the brand of our sunscreen to the hotel where we stay. Let's keep nurturing, promoting and contributing in taking care of our planet, keep in mind that small changes make the difference!
Did you know that coral reefs, mangroves and seagrasses contribute to climate change mitigation? They are the hope for the preservation of life on the planet as we know it, so it is essential to understand the role they play in the entire life system and to keep an eye on their conservation.
According to UN official sources, 70% of the world's coral reefs are currently under threat: 20% have been destroyed and with no hope of recovery, while 24% are in imminent risk of collapse, and another 26% are threatened by long-term threats. If nothing is done, by 2050 we could lose all the reefs on the planet.
But new opportunities are opening up giving us hope for the conservation of the oceans' biodiversity, and especially of the reefs. We’ve signed an agreement with Oceanus A.C. to join the Reef Restoration Program and support the protection of 500 coral colonies in Puerto Morelos and Cozumel.
We hope to increase the number of healthy coral colonies to recover reef sites and their associated fauna, increasing the resilience and connectivity of coral reefs and generating, in parallel, benefits for local communities.
Achievements of the Reef Restoration Program:
- 10,000 transplanted colonies.
- 5 incubators in operation.
- Over 90% survival rate.
- The oldest colonies are now 5 years old, and some have grown to over 1.30 meters in diameter and close to 50 centimeters in height.
The planet belongs to everyone, and its care and preservation are in the hands of each one of us, so when visiting our beaches we recommend protect yourself from the sun's rays by wearing long-sleeved UV shirts, a hat and avoid using sunscreen, littering and overuse of water, so you also contribute to the protection and conservation of the reefs.
Over 50 years and going back to the company's beginnings, El Cid Resorts has always been a leader in implementing sustainable innovations such as; use of solar panels, detection and conservation of new species of flora and fauna within the grounds of the property and the process of regrowth and replanting of mangroves.
Making a difference is our promise to the planet.
